STAYING HEALTHY IN THE HEAT
Added 184 days ago. 13 July 2025
Heatwaves can be lovely, but it’s no fun when you’re sweating or can’t sleep! Follow our tips to stay in control as the temperatures soar.
Stay hydrated: keep your fluids up, even if you don't feel thirsty.
- Aim to drink 6–8 cups of fluid a day - water is best, but tea, squash, and milk all count.
- Keep a jug or bottle of water nearby so it’s easy to sip throughout the day.
- Choose cold drinks or add ice for a refreshing boost.
- If you’re not keen on plain water, try flavoured water, herbal teas, or diluted squash.
- Include foods with a high water content such as cucumber, tomatoes, melon and jelly to help keep you cool and hydrated.

Keep cool at home: make your home a comfortable space.
- Close curtains and windows during the hottest part of the day (usually 11am–3pm) to keep the heat out. Open them again in the early morning and late evening to let cooler air in.
- Use a fan in the rooms you spend most time in - but keep a little moisturiser handy as fans can dry out your skin.
- Dab your face and neck with a damp flannel or use a misting spray for a quick cool-down.
- Choose breathable bedding like cotton sheets. Synthetic fabrics can trap heat and make it harder to stay comfy at night.
- Wear loose, light-coloured clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen.
Stay nourished: keep your energy up even if you've less appetite.
- If you don’t fancy a big meal, aim to eat little and often throughout the day. Milky drinks and smoothies can help.
- Choose light, balanced meals that are easy to digest, like salads, sandwiches or ready-prepared dishes.
- Wiltshire Farm Foods Mini Meals and Mini Meal Extras are ideal smaller portions that still include all the major food groups.
- Try a cool, refreshing dish like one of our thaw-and-serve pasta salads.
- Top up with yogurt, fruit, crackers or one of our tasty snack options.

Out & about: a little planning helps you stay safe in the sun.
- Avoid going out in the hottest part of the day (11am to 3pm).
- Always take a bottle of water with you.
- Stick to shaded areas or air-conditioned spaces when you can.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and light, loose clothing
- Let someone know if you’re heading out, and carry a mobile phone if possible.
- And remember: If you feel unwell, dizzy, or too hot, it’s important to rest, cool down and seek help if you need it.
Stay cool, stay hydrated - and stay safe!
