A Real Scoop

Added 359 days ago. 25 July 2018

With the launch of three new ice cream flavours, we take a ‘lick’ at one of summer’s sweetest treats.

THE COLD DESSERT OF CHOICE...

Whether you prefer a combination of flavours towering in a sundae glass, or a simple scoop on a cone, on a hot summer’s day ice cream is a truly indulgent treat that cools us down and tastes delicious.

But we’re not the first to realise the restorative powers of a frozen dessert. In Ancient Persia, China and Rome, scholars recorded sweet frozen dishes, and in the sixteenth century, Indian emperors created kulfi, a frozen dessert still enjoyed today.

DID YOU KNOW...

During World War II, American fighter pilots in the South Pacific attached gallon cans fitted with a small propeller to their aircraft – as the planes flew at high altitudes, the stirrer agitated ingredients inside the cans and froze the mixture to create ice cream.

When Italian duchess Catherine de’ Medici married Henry II of France in 1533, she is reported to have brought Italian chefs with her from her homeland, to create flavoured ices and sorbets. Just a hundred years later, Charles I of England offered his ice cream maker a lifetime pension in return for keeping the recipe secret.

ICE CREAM IN MODERN TIMES

By the 18th century, recipes were published in the UK and North America with hand-cranked machines used to create a variety of flavours. The cone became popular at the 1904 World’s Fair in St Louis when a seller ran out of dishes and teamed up with a waffle maker to create an alternative method of serving. With the development of cheap refrigeration, ice cream became the everyday pleasure we love today. It’s estimated 14 million adults buy ice cream each year in the UK alone.

FANCY A TREAT?

Wiltshire Farm Foods’ range of real dairy ice cream is made with organic milk from Will and Dawn Hawking’s 250 cows at Marshfield Farm.

The couple have been making delicious ice cream for nearly 27 years. As you might imagine, the frozen treats make the perfect pick-me-up or after-dinner dessert at the end of a hot summer’s day.
