Those who follow a strict gluten-free diet may find that pea flour could serve as a useful alternative to wheat, it has been advised.
Amy Peterson of Coeliac UK, speaking to Phil Clarke's Business Blog, suggested that using the produce would allow coeliacs and people who choose not to eat food containing gluten to use flour to make things such as biscuits and batters.
Similarly nutritionist Judith Buttress explained that peas, both frozen and fresh, can count towards the UK-recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables per day, as well as providing the body with a great source of fibre and iron.
Earlier this week (February 2nd) Dr Chris Steele, resident doctor on ITV's This Morning, handed over an 8,783-strong petition to the government urging policy makers to introduce measures that will improve the diagnosis of coeliac disease.
The only treatment for those who suffer from the condition is the adoption of a strict lifelong gluten-free diet.
