People looking to lead as healthy a lifestyle as possible in their later years should ensure the food they eat contains as many nutrients as possible.
This is according to nutritionist Ann Selina Chang, who told the Straits Times that the fact that people's diets tend to shift towards eating less as they grow older means the food they do eat needs to be as nutritious as it can be.
She recommended looking for foods containing nutrients that boost the immune system, including vitamins A, C and E and minerals such as selenium and zinc.
Such nutrients can also be ideal for those nursing conditions such as diabetes, Ms Chang remarked.
According to Diabetes UK, those with diabetes should see a dietitian regularly and ensure they eat three meals a day, eat low fat food and consume more fruit and vegetables.
The charity also advises eating two portions of oily fish a week and only drinking alcohol in moderation.
Those who stick to a healthy, balanced diet are less likely to suffer from heart disease in later life, one expert has explained.
Those who are hoping to receive optimum levels of nutrition from the food they eat would be wise to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, one expert has stated.
Those who are hoping to stick to a strict calorie controlled diet may wish to opt for pre-packaged frozen meals, as one expert has suggested they can help consumers eat less by offering "instant portion control".
