WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
Coeliac disease describes an intolerance to gluten, and is an autoimmune disease. Each time a sufferer eats gluten damage is caused to the small intestine, preventing normal digestion and absorption of food. If left undiagnosed and not treated with a strict gluten free diet, the disease can lead to malnutrition, osteoporosis, bowel cancer and can account for fertility problems.
Coeliac UK states that the average length of time it takes for someone to be diagnosed from the onset of symptoms is a shocking 13 years, with the majority diagnosed between 40 and 50 years of age. So what are the symptoms to look out for?
Symptoms will vary from person to person, and may not be limited to stomach problems, so you should always be on the lookout for the following clues -
Bloating or abdominal pain, nausea, wind, constipation or diarrhoea, tiredness, anaemia, headaches, mouth ulcers, recurrent miscarriages, weight loss, skin problems, depression, joint and bone pain, and nerve problems.
Gluten is found in obvious sources such as breads, pasta, flours, cereals, cakes and biscuits, and is used as ingredients in many household foods such as gravies and baked beans, so it is essential you check labels carefully. Coeliac UK’s Food and Drink Directory can be an invaluable resource, listing thousands of gluten free options. Visit the Coeliac UK online shop to buy online.
VISIT YOUR GP
Even if you display many of the aforementioned symptoms you should not eliminate gluten from your diet until you have received a formal diagnosis. If you suspect you may be gluten intolerant you should visit your GP immediately for a blood test. Once diagnosed adherence to a strict, life-long gluten-free diet is necessary to ensure a reversal of the damage and symptoms.
