The benefits of frozen food

Frozen food is convenient food, and often comes under fire for being substandard to, or less healthy than, its fresh counterpart – when the reality couldn’t be more different.

Freezing is nature’s way of preserving food, favoured by our ancestors for thousands of years – with no need for any artificial preservatives!

In fact, because products are harvested and frozen at the peak of their quality, the freshness is effectively locked in until you come to enjoy it. Research from the British Frozen Food Federation proves that frozen vegetables maintain superior levels of vitamins than many vegetables sold as fresh, because the freezing process is so swift:

Vegetable                       Quantity of Vitamin C (mg/100 g)*

Freshly picked peas                         22.1

Fresh peas (after 2 days)                  14.1

Frozen peas                                     20.2

Freshly picked spinach                     17.0

Fresh spinach (after 2 days)               4.1

Frozen spinach                                 14.0

Freshly picked French beans            16.4

Fresh French beans (after 2 days)      7.9

Frozen French beans                         14.3

Fresh fruit and vegetables are harvested, transported, stored and then transported to their point of sale, so it is quite usual for products to be up to 14 days old before they reach your plate, with valuable nutrients being lost.

Did you know? Frozen oven chips have 33% more vitamin C than chips you cut yourself from fresh potatoes. That’s because they are frozen so quickly, they retain their nutrients.

As well as being better for you, frozen food offers you the flexibility and choice that fresh food cannot, due to the seasonality of crops and exotic ingredients, with no need for preparation. And the good news for both your pocket and the environment is that, due to a long shelf-life, there are fewer deliveries needed and significantly reduced wastage, as you can use as much or as little as you like.

Being a natural process, there is no need to add preservatives which are often found in chilled, ambient or ‘fresh’ foods, so frozen is often closer to our perception of ‘natural’ food than you may think.

Catering for many different dietary options, we have the meals to match your high expectations. You can be sure that with Wiltshire Farm Foods you’re guaranteed a mouth-watering menu, packed with nutrients and ready to enjoy at a time that suits you.
