Retirement is the time to indulge yourself, make the most of the hobbies you neglected throughout your working life, meet friends, take up tennis and the like. But for some of you it’s no-no as increasing numbers of over-65s or ‘silver foxes’ are leaving retirement by the wayside to pursue new careers.
Free time is great but the reality is you can have too much of a good thing and according to a report called Living Britain some of you find retirement a royal bore. The Americans have dubbed it ‘returnment’ and as we live longer we are also working longer to fund eventual retirement, making second and third careers the norm for many. Retirement careers are attributed to 15% of new business start ups in the past year and this is estimated to rise to 21% next year. Researchers found that out of 1000 ‘baby-boomers’ approaching retirement age 30% planned to carry on working whilst 20% said they would start their own business. There are great opportunities for ‘silver foxes’ as the working demographic changes and companies are looking for those with experience and a strong work ethic, with companies recruiting consultants from the older age bracket as the recent survey from the Employer’s Forum on Age found that 90% of over-60s like to work, higher than any other age group. Younger workers tend to make more rash decisions and it is agreed that older employees bring with them a sense of equilibrium and security. Companies including B&Q, Nationwide, Sainsbury’s and HSBC have been highlighted as seeking older applicants and Government figures show a record 1.2 million pensioners are still in work, with numbers rising faster than any other age group. Clifford Carins, 72 has worked at his local golf shop in Wallasey in the Wirral for over ten years since retiring at 66: “After I retired from the printing business I couldn’t just sit around at home, I would have went mad with boredom! I’ve always been a golf enthusiast and helped out but it’s a godsend to work a few hours in the shop – I get to socialise with all my mates as they head out onto the course and at the end of a shift I can join them – perfect! And of course its a few extra pennies so I can afford sweet treats like Wiltshire Farm Foods Butterscotch and Treacle Pudding and Hot Black Forest Sponge smothered in yummy chocolate – I’m an absolute pudding fiend!”
