Diabetes is an increasingly common condition in which the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood becomes too high because the body cannot use it properly. People with diabetes are generally advised to eat a healthy diet that is lower in fat and higher in fibre. This may involve regimenting diet alone or a with combination of diet and tablets or insulin.
It is important to monitor sugar levels throughout the day by testing the blood by finger pricking. Before breakfast it should not exceed 5.8, while after eating it should be below 8.9. As an average people with diabetes should aim for below 7, but ideally this average should be below 6. Over the Christmas period food tends to be rich and higher in fat and calories than the rest of the year. All of our main meals at Wiltshire Farm Foods and a wide selection of hot and cold desserts are suitable for those with diabetes. Our brand new Winter Comforts range offers a fabulous new range of meals for this type of diet. The delicious Roast Duck in Orange Sauce, accompanied by parsley and roast potatoes and a delicious mix of carrots and sugar snap peas is perfect for a diabetes option – there’s no reason you should have to go without! For Christmas we’ve also created a superb Diabetic Christmas Pudding packed with fruit and served with lashes of custard, so go on, treat yourself!
