Wendy and David Barlow of Wiltshire Farm Foods in Stockport have participated in the Royal British Legion’s London to Paris bike ride, cycling a staggering 280 miles!
The annual event kicked off at Greenwich on the 28th August with around 270 cyclists taking part. Averaging 70 miles per day Wendy and David made their way through the Garden of England, passing Canterbury and heading towards the coast of Dover to board the ferry to Calais. Day two saw the group heading south through beautiful rural landscapes, passing ancient Desvres, the valleys of the Canche river ending up in Abbeville, retaining its Flemish-style architecture despite a German air raid during World War Two. Leaving Abbeville Wendy and David followed the River Somme east in the direction of Amiens. Wendy said that the area was “renowned for the terrible battles of the First World War and are scattered with cemeteries of those who died, it was very touching.” The final day’s cycling took the pair from Beauvais towards the heaving capital city of Paris where the streets were brought to a standstill for the event. “There were around thirty ladies and we were brought to the front to be led by an official car up the Champs d’Elysee with all the cars stopped, everyone was hooting and waving, it was fantastic” Wendy exclaimed. Their journey ended at the Arc de Triomphe where they were presented with medals and took part in a memorial service with the President of the British Legion Air Marshall Ian MacFayden CB OBE FRAes. The couple have always been firm fans of keeping fit and began cycling for charity three years ago, discovering that they could cover 60 miles with relatively little aches or pains. “We did one in Ireland last year but that was only 200 miles or so,” said Wendy blithely! “It’s a great way to see the country,” offered David, “this weekend we’re doing a 150m trip in the Lake District for an autism charity.” The couple have raised upwards of £700 for the Royal British Legion, and David was unfazed by their mileage, even though the couple are in their early sixties. As franchisees of Wiltshire Farm Foods, the frozen meal delivery specialists the couple can allow themselves enough free time to pursue their hobbies: “I think it’s psychological more than anything, once you’ve done it you know you can do it and get on with it, 60 miles suddenly seems like nothing and it’s vital to keep fit and active as you get older. We will slow down for winter though.” Especially as the new Winter Comforts meals are unveiled – Wendy gets the feeling the new range will keep them on their toes: “We’ve got a gorgeous selection this year” says Wendy, “I think my favourites are the Roast Duck in Orange Sauce and the new Beef Bordelaise – it’s a lovely rich sauce. I love all the meals and it depends on how hungry I am, but the Lamb Shank With Caramelised Red Onions and one of the new side dishes are perfect when you’ve got a hearty appetite and I can’t wait to try the Butterscotch and Treacle Pudding - it looks out of this world!”
